For well over a year, Jay-Z and Boston Red Sox star, David Ortiz, have been battling in court over their nightclubs. In 2003, Jay-Z made major news when he announced the launch of the 40/40 Club in Manhattan. Six years later, David Ortiz launched a club, of the same name, in his native country, Dominican Republic.
Upon discovering the club name, Jay-Z filed a lawsuit against Ortiz and demanded he change the name of his club. Their issues were made public last summer. Jay-Z's legal team accused David Ortiz of knowing about the famed 40/40 Club when he opened his Forty Forty Club, but the baseball star claimed to be unaware of the name.
Not only did Ortiz know about the club, he spent much time at the flagship club in Manhattan. Many assumed the dust had settled in the situation, but clearly it has not. Jay-Z is suing for $5 million for infringement and David Ortiz' legal team says that is entirely too much money to pay. The judge handling the case, said none of the reps for either man has the authority to make a decision.
Because of this, Jay-Z and David Ortiz will face off in court later this month.
