Initially, Game planned to retire upon releasing L.A.X. Feeling he had done all he could with the rap game, the Compton rapper was moving on. But, his contract with Geffen Records demanded he release one more album.

In order to honor his contract, Game began recording a new album in 2009. Game announced the title for this album as The R.E.D. Album. The release date was initially set for a late 2009 release, but the album would soon be sidetracked.

Game was ready to move on with his career, giving up on a Dr. Dre reunion and focusing on music. But, things changed when he actually reunited with Dr. Dre. The result of this was Game signing back with the Aftermath label and Dre working on the album.

Due to Dr. Dre's input, the album has been held up for nearly two years. But, Game promised fans he would be releasing The R.E.D. Album before the end of 2011. Recently, he scheduled the album for an August releast date. This will make it an even three years since Game last released a studio album.
