Just Blaze talks "The Greatest Story Never Told"

By The Hip Hop Writer
Hip Hop Vibe Staff Writer

With Dr. Dre finally releasing Detox, Saigon finally landed a secure deal to release The Greatest Story Never Told. Over the course of five years, singles have been released and release dates have been announced. But, even with all of the hype, nothing has ever come from Saigon.

At one point, in 2007, Saigon called out Just Blaze, the executive producer of the album. Not only was Just producing the album, but he had also signed Saigon to Fort Knocks Entertainment. It was assumed he had a deal, himself, with Atlantic Records. But, after the way they mishandled Saigon, Just Blaze left.

Despite all of the ups and downs, Just Blaze and Saigon stuck together and they plan to release the album in February. With the album finally coming, Just Blaze decided to open up. He said that issues with Atlantic Records held the album up and they could not find a good enough offer from anyone else, so they held on to the album. During this time, they were able to rework the album.

Just Blaze promises people they will be able to hear Saigon's pain and hunger from the past four years come to life on the official release of The Greatest Story Never Told. The album will be released on February 15 on Fort Knocks Entertainment and Suburban Noize Records.

Busta Rhymes launches Conglomerate Records

By The Hip Hop Writer
Hip Hop Vibe Staff Writer

For as long as he has been in the hip hop game, Busta Rhymes has held himself down. When he had his first meeting with Elektra Records, Busta Rhymes created Flipmode Records. The label was run under Elektra Records and was home to a few other artists.

Rampage and Rah Digga were among the most popular artists on the label. When Busta Rhymes left Elektra Records, so did the artists signed to Flipmode Records. But, things changed when the boss decided to join Dr. Dre's team. Busta Rhymes signed a joint-venture deal with Aftermath Entertainment in 2005.

The deal left Flipmode Records without a solid distributor, but it left Busta Rhymes a nice deal with Aftermath/Interscope. The deal only lasted for one album before it went sour. A fight broke out between Busta Rhymes and Interscope Records owner, Jimmy Iovine, in 2007. Following the fight, he allowed Busta Rhymes to sign with Universal Records.

Universal Records not only signed Busta Rhymes, but also put together a deal to distribute his Flipmode Records. Under the terms of the deal, Busta Rhymes only had to keep good music flowing. In 2009, the first release from the album came B.O.M.B. Originally, Busta had plans of releasing his "final" album, The Chemo before the end of 2009. But, he changed the concept of the album and pushed it back to 2010 and pushed the album well into 2011.

When 2011 comes, Busta Rhymes will not be releasing albums on Flipmode Records. Instead, his next releases will be coming from Conglomerate Records, his new label. The label is named after his 2009 single, "Respect My Conglomerate." Reek da Villain is the first artist signed to the label, he was also signed to the old Flipmode Records for a period of time. However, when Reek's album did not come, he decided to leave the label, but they reunited over the summer of 2010.

Hip Hop Vibe's Bust of the Year: T.I.

By The Hip Hop Writer
Hip Hop Vibe Staff Writer

After missing out on 2009's action due to his imprisonment, T.I. was supposed to dominate 2010. In March, T.I. made his first public appearance and released "I'm Back." The song was a minor hit and the summer was set to be T.I.'s summer. But, suddenly, "I'm Back" stalled and T.I. was an afterthought.

Atlantic Records no longer thought of T.I. as a top priority with buzz building around Wiz Khalifa. Without the support of his record label, the Grand Hustle CEO began his own movement. Because of his message, the people had his back. Still, he could not score a true hit single.

Even though things were not looking good for him, T.I. still kept pressing and trying to make things happen. But, in September, he officially killed his comeback attempt. During a trip to Los Angeles, he and his wife, Tameka "Tiny" Cottle, were pulled over by the police. The couple was searched and caught with drugs and T.I. was sentenced to eleven months in prison.

T.I. was hauled back off immediately and he had to change the title of his album from King Uncaged. He quickly teamed up with Chris Brown to record a new lead single. Much like T.I., Chris Brown was trying to rebound from a major mistake. The two recorded the popular song, "Get Back Up," but it was not enough to help No Mercy sell the way Paper Trail did. T.I. had promised a major comeback in 2010, but he could not get his record label to cooperate and he landed himself another prison sentence.

With all of those accomplishments, T.I. is Hip Hop Vibe's Bust of the Year for 2010.

Q-Tip gives Drake pointers for "Take Care"

By The Hip Hop Writer
Hip Hop Vibe Staff Writer

Drake represents the new era of hip hop, but he has not forgotten about those who came before him. The Canadian rapper is actually one of the first stars to reach out to the major veterans in the game. Drake has relationships with plenty of veteran rappers in the game.

Q-Tip is among the veteran rappers Drake has an affiliation with. The two met during Jay-Z and Eminem's concert at Yankee Stadium. Drake introduced himself to Q-Tip through a mutual friend and they formed their own friendship. In the time since their first meeting, Q-Tip has been giving Drake advice.

Advice is not the only thing Q-Tip is giving Drake. It is no secret that Drake is currently recording Take Care. Because the album is Drake's, it is expected to sell very well. Realizing this, Q-Tip has made a beat specifically for Drake and also has recorded a verse on it. With his second album, Drake said he wanted to have more of a veteran feel and now he has it.

Drake is also working with 9th Wonder and DJ Premier on Take Care. The album is expected to be released sometime in the spring of 2011.

DJ Premier talks Guru's death

By The Hip Hop Writer
Hip Hop Vibe Staff Writer

Hip hop was forever changed when Guru passed away earlier this year. Guru had worked with DJ Premier for years as members of Gang Starr. During the final days of Guru's life, he became extremely close to DJ Premier.

Premo recently announced he was going to release some unseen footage of Guru. The material is from when Guru was in good health. DJ Premier revealed he did all of the video work for Gang Starr from 1989 until 1993.

After Guru's death, there were rumors of him writing a letter to his friend, DJ Premier. Following his death, DJ Premier released a statement about how he felt. But, when asked about the letter, he said it did not exist.

Nicki Minaj plans Hollywood Takeover

By The Hip Hop Writer
Hip Hop Vibe Staff Writer

In one short year, Nicki Minaj took over hip hop and did not even have an album out. Nicki Minaj released three successful singles over the course of 2010. Outside of her own singles, she has helped veterans such as Usher and Ludacris chart hits.

Nicki Minaj's buzz was so big this year that other female rappers have been talking about her. She has received her blessing from Eve. While she has Eve's blessing, Nicki Minaj has been feuding with the rest. It has mainly been Lil' Kim and Khia who dislike Nicki.

Because she cannot do anything about the disses, Nicki Minaj can only move forward. Since she mastered the hip hop game in only a few months, Nicki has Hollywood on the brain. She is determined to star in a Tim Burton film in the near future.

Willow Smith talks "Parents Just Don't Understand" remake

By The Hip Hop Writer
Hip Hop Vibe Staff Writer

In the final few months of 2010, Willow Smith turned the whole world on its ear. She is the child of Will and Jada Smith and she is making her own mark. Smith came out with the single, "Whip My Hair," and created an anthem. Now, she has to put together an album to house the anthem.

The set release date for Willow Smith's debut album is 2011 and she is making preparations. Despite her goal of topping her father's success, many believe Willow is only a one-hit-wonder. Willow wants to people to think whatever they want to about her. She has major plans.

In an effort to avoid falling into the one-hit-wonder trap, Smith has discussed remaking Will Smith's hit "Parents Just Don't Understand." When he released the song, Will Smith did not have children, now he finds himself being a parent and his own child saying he does not understand. That part may hurt, but seeing his child shine more than makes up for it.

Nothing is set in stone, but Willow Smith would like to remake the song and put it on her upcoming album. If completed, the song would likely become a single sometime in the spring or summer of 2011.

On the Rise: J. Nolan

By The Hip Hop Writer
Hip Hop Vibe Staff Writer

J. Nolan has been putting in work for quite some time trying to build his career. He has been around most of the country. At various times in his life, J. Nolan has lived in Connecticut, California, and he currently resides in Georgia.

For twelve years, J. Nolan has been putting rhymes together. But, for the past five years, rap has become more of a passion than a hobby. In these short five years, J. Nolan has risen to become a very popular underground voice in the South.

Right now, J. Nolan feels he has the right team around him to make 2011 into a very profitable year for him. Recently, the rapper caught up with Hip Hop Vibe via Facebook for an exclusive interview.

Q. How long have you been rapping?
A. I've been rapping for about 12 years now, seriously for about 5.

Q. What was your first time in the studio like?

A. My first time in the studio was pretty cool. It was set up in a friend's house so I was able to get comfortable and develop at a natural rate.

Q. Have you received criticism because of the way you sound?

A. Not really criticism, but a lot of people have compared me to Lupe Fiasco as soon as they heard me. He's one of my favorite artists, but I think some people might have written me off as a fake version of him or something. Especially when I first started making my music available online.

Q. What seperates you from other artists in the game?

A. I think what separates me is the fact that I'm not after what most of these other current artists want. I'm doing what I genuinely love to do and I think that shows in my music. The struggles that I speak of in my songs haven't been documented in Hip-Hop in a major way since the 90's. You'd think that everyone is really making millions and living it up everyday of their lives.

Q. How do you plan to stay in the game longer than most artists?
A. I plan to stay true to myself in the long run. Of course I'm going to grow artistically and personally, but I want to always represent where I came from and tell the stories that people need to hear.

Q. Are you currently working on any new material?

A. Yeah, I'm working on 2 new projects. The Loose Files and Chaos Theory. The Loose Files is a collection of tracks that I've been working on for awhile and Chaos Theory is going to be more of a focused concept.

Q. Have you been or currently signed to a label?

A. I've never been signed, still currently unsigned.

Q. Who is your biggest influence in rap?

A. I'd have to say NaS. From the amount of messages I've gotten from his music and the various rhyme schemes I learned from him, he's got to be my biggest influence.

Q. Who is your biggest influence outside of rap?

A. Outside of rap, I can't really name any particular artists, but I'd say jazz music as a whole. It's really influenced my way of approaching records and I have a lot of jazz infused beats due to my strong interest.

Q. What led to you becoming a rapper?

A. It was a natural progression for me. My first rap ever was in 4th grade and up until 9th grade I was messing around with freestyling and other things that dealt with Hip-Hop. Once I started taking it seriously in high school I knew that I had found part of my calling here on Earth.

Q. Have you ever considered quitting the game?

A. Not once. I've questioned why I haven't been noticed by a larger audience, but never considered leaving.

Q. What keeps you going?

A. Creating music itself keeps me going. It's my strongest talent and my passion. Even when I can't stand a majority of what's coming out in the industry, I can still turn my thoughts into something real.

Q. Who was your favorite rapper growing up?
A. I had a few different favorites. First was Snoop Dogg, then 2pac, then Jay-Z. As I got older I got more into Nas, and the last rappers I could consider as favorite are Lupe Fiasco and eLZhi.

Q. Where can people hear more music from you?

A. All of my material from the past couple of years is readily available at http://jnolaniscool.bandcamp.com/ for free.

Q. Have you been featured on other websites?
A. I've been featured on numerous websites since late 2008 with my older projects up to my most recent work. It's a blessing to even be remotely noticed for my craft.

Soulja Boy's camp blames Interscope Records for Low Album Sales

By The Hip Hop Writer
Hip Hop Vibe Staff Writer

Three years ago, 50 Cent complained that Interscope Records did not properly promote Curtis. At the time, the label was focusing their energy on Soulja Boy, who debuted a platinum album. However, as the years have gone by, the focus has shifted again.

In 2007 and 2008, Soulja Boy delivered two high-selling albums and numerous chart-topping singles. But, in the time since then, he has been away from the game. Soulja Boy has gotten fair radio play, but the response has not been the same to his songs.

As a result, Soulja Boy's songs are not going far on the charts, which leads to low sales. People within Soulja Boy's camp are blaming this mess on Interscope Records. Like 50 Cent, Soulja Boy is saying he has done all of the promotion for this new album.

Soulja Boy feels Interscope Records could have done more to promote his album. When the album was released, Boi-1da said the album was nowhere to be found. He feels Interscope Records did not send many copies out the album out to stores across the country if his store barely had the album in stock. Soulja Boy said his album was all of the way at the back of the rack and the average fan will not look that hard.

Redman discusses State of New Jersey rap

By The Hip Hop Writer
Hip Hop Vibe Staff Writer

The New Jersey hip hop scene has been under the shadow of New York hip hop ever since the start. The few New Jersey artists who have made it, blended in with the New York rap scene. Redman has always represented New Jersey, but the casual fan would mistake him for a New York rapper.

While Red has all of the love in the world for New York hip hop, he wants his own people to show up. There are only two rappers actively holding New Jersey down. Redman is one of them and the other one is Joe Budden. While Redman is enjoying the music, he thinks they need some help.

Recently, Redman posted a "Help Wanted" sign online asking of some New Jersey rappers to step their game up. Redman said there is plenty of room for more New Jersey rappers. While there are some rappers from New Jersey, the rap market there is not taken seriously and it is often merged into New York rap. Redman wants this to change and for New Jersey to be taken seriously in its own right.

Redman wants all of the New Jersey rappers out there to go ahead and get noticed to they can help put the state on the map.

Young Chris talks Leaving Roc-A-Fella and Rico Love deal

By The Hip Hop Writer
Hip Hop Vibe Staff Writer

Before Jay-Z left Roc-A-Fella Records, he had plans of making Young Chris the next face of the label. Chris had been signed with the Roc for four years at the time. But, he was only one half of the duo, Young Gunz. The duo had one hit, "Can't Stop/Won't Stop," and they were forgotten.

However, on the mixtape scene, Young Chris shined and Jay-Z was watching. But, in 2008, an offer was given to Jay-Z that he could not refuse. He landed the deal with Live Nation which led to the creation of Roc Nation. Following this deal, Young Chris hinted towards signing with the label.

But, after seeing how long J. Cole has been waiting to release his album, Young Chris decided to wait. Instead, he signed with Rico Love's Division1 label. Rico Love, himself, has a lucrative deal with powerhouse label, Universal Motown. Young Chris looked completely past Roc Nation and went ahead and signed with Division1.

Looking back on the move, Young Chris said it was one of the smartest moves he pulled off. He said he does not regret this deal at all. The reason Young Chris signed so easily with Rico Love was because he was so talented. Young Chris said the chemistry the two have is undeniable. With such strong chemistry, he could not waste any time putting together this deal. He already feels as if he has missed out on valuable time and he does not want to miss any more. Sometime next year, Young Chris wants to release his debut album.

Drake heads to New York for New Album

By The Hip Hop Writer
Hip Hop Vibe Staff Writer

Despite being from Canada, Drake spends a lot of time in the United States. Most of his inspiration comes from within the States. His debut album, Thank Me Later, was recorded in the US and it is looking like his follow-up will be too.

One of Drake's favorite songs was "Empire State of Mind" by Jay-Z and Alicia Keys. Aside from the catchy melody, the song stuck close to Drake because he loves New York. The iconic city is where Drake hoped to land one day and he did.

In need of inspiration to put together his Take Care album, it looks like the Empire City will be seeing more of Drake. The rapper plans to spend a lot of time there thinking up new lyrics for the album. Drake and Lil Wayne both are in New York City working on their new music and they will ring in the New Year in the city.

Drake plans to release Take Care sometime in the spring of 2011.

Foxy Brown talks Lil' Kim and Christmas no-show

By The Hip Hop Writer
Hip Hop Vibe Staff Writer

Lil' Kim's feud with Nicki Minaj has quickly made front page news and people have forgotten about Foxy Brown. Brown has feuds with both rappers. While she dislikes Nicki Minaj, Foxy's primary beef is with Lil' Kim.

Towards the end of November, Lil' Kim's feud with Nicki Minaj peaked. The two rappers have been trading jabs for a little while and things finally reached a head. In the middle of all of this, Nicki Minaj actually released her debut album and Lil' Kim released a response.

Foxy Brown had plans of doing a concert for Christmas. During this concert Foxy Brown was going to release "Christmas Massacre," a diss aimed at Lil' Kim. But, this never happened because she never showed up.

The reason Foxy Brown did not perform was because of a death to someone close to her and she offered an apology to all of her fans who expected to see her.

Hip Hop Vibe's Comeback of the Year: Kanye West

By The Hip Hop Writer
Hip Hop Vibe Staff Writer

Last year, Kanye West dug himself a pretty deep hole when he took the mic from Taylor Swift at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards. It was something unexpected even from the controversial rapper. Many people were turned off from Kanye West because of his immature actions. Even the president referred to West as a "jackass."

Following Kanye West's VMA outburst, the media made him into a scapegoat. With all of the negative energy surrounding him, Kanye took some time off. He did not simply go back home to Chicago, he instead went overseas. When Kanye West did return to America, he spent time in Hawaii.

Initially, Kanye West had plans of putting an album out in 2009, but those plans were obviously halted. Instead, he began working on an album for 2010 to be released. The only problem with Kanye working on new music was the fact that his fan base was shattered. After the release of Graduation, West had built a major fan base outside of hip hop that was no longer there.

With comeback on his mind, Kanye West recorded with all of the top artists in the game. He had a popular guest feature on Rick Ross' "Live Fast, Die Young" off the Teflon Don album. During his verse on the song, the Chicago rapper spoke on his struggles. Lines such as "at least he still poppin' in Japan" stick out on the record. Kanye West would release "Power" later on in the summer and take more jabs at the people who put him down. The video received major attention because it was only one minute long.

Despite an album not being out, Kanye West had the attention of the world again and he released his second single, "Runaway." On the heels of the successful single, Kanye West released another smash, "Monster," which features Jay-Z, Rick Ross, and Nicki Minaj. "Monster" became the posse cut of 2010, much like the hit, "Forever," in 2009 and "Swagga Like Us" in 2008. Ironically, all of those singles featured a verse from Kanye West.

The year of 2010 could have been the year when the people finally forgot about Kanye West. Instead, 2010 was the year when Kanye West proved he could still take over the game if he wanted to. Most of the focus on a comeback was on T.I., but Kanye West ended up stealing the show. Despite waiting until late in the year to release music, Kanye West could have almost been 2010's Artist of the Year, a closely contested battle between Eminem and Rick Ross.

J. Cole talks Nas encounter

By The Hip Hop Writer
Hip Hop Vibe Staff Writer

Ever since he entered the game, J. Cole has received multiple comparisons to Nas. Last summer, the Roc Nation star admitted he looked up to Nas. Recently, J. Cole opened up about the first time he met his idol.

J. Cole said the comparisons to Nas never felt right to him. He feels he has to do plenty of growing before he is on that level. It was not that long ago when the two first met. J. Cole made sure to be on his best behavior during that time.

In a recent interview, J. Cole expanded on this. He said he made sure he gave Nas extra props. Cole admitted he bowed down in Nas' presence. He made it clear he was a major Nas fan. Nas also admitted he was a fan of J. Cole's.

The Fayetteville rapper also admitted that he would do a collaboration album with Nas if the Queens emcee ever wanted to do one.
