This is interesting. I was at Best Buy today and overheard the overstaffed workers talking with each other about how they couldn't sell iPads anymore...

They were just as puzzled as I was

... the leftist side of the antiwar movement is all but gone, but not because the policies have changed, only because the man has changed.

If you listen to enough leftists you'll find plenty of people like me who question our involvement in Libya. However, to claim the policies are the same as Iraq ignores the very real fact that the United Nations Security Council approved this action.

While that lends credence to the notion that this isn't simply another example of American imperialism at work, it still isn't sufficient to convince me that it's the best solution to the problem.

Then that just begs the question, "why haven't these people left already?" FCP has been fairly stagnant for years. There are plenty of other alternatives, so doesn't that kinda make them fanboyish too for sticking it out when up to this point Apple has given zero hints about when or how it will take FCP to the next level?

I'm not in the video editing biz, but if the pro s/w I use in my profession hobbled my efficiency and workflow the way you are carping about FCP, and there were viable alternatives, I would abandon it quicker than pigeon can snatch a bread crumb. Just sayin'.

People just love to complain. Yes Apple has been a little behind in the NLE business lately. They can't be on top all the time. Avid has made fantastic strides lately, and so has Adobe, although I would never advise using Premiere. You have to remember though Avid made a lot of bad moves, from nearly dropping Mac support to their closed hardware system. Just recently have they finally started to look like they got it together. FCP is being updated today, so all this nonsense about apple neglecting the pro market can stop. You may not like the update, but from what I've heard (not much) it's going to be pretty amazing.

I think this IS a privacy issue. That data could end up in the wrong hands. Does anyone store a text document on their iPhone with a list of their bank details and passwords? No, because it could end up in the wrong hands. So could this data that's being collected.

This data shouldn't be recorded without permission, no matter what's being done with it.

Not true. Apple doesn't need the iTunes Store since all iPods are full of stolen music! ;)

No kidding! Hasn't Apple done enough to promote legal music purchases?

Wow. That's surprising. This whole time people downplayed it because there was no evidence that apple was actually transmitting this data. It wasn't a big deal because the db file was local only. Now when Apple addresses it they had to not only admit that the file exists but that they actually were transmitting data.

Ah well, still not a big deal. :p

It is not surprising (http://images.apple.com/legal/sla/docs/iphone.pdf) (pdf).

I forgot the most obvious thing that has been missing since FCP has existed. When outputting to tape, we shouldn't have to drag a sequence over to "Assemble". We should be able to hit the Assemble button for the current sequence open.

Also, I hate how the Preview takes up the whole screen. I much prefer the Avid way where you can see your sequence and playhead move live. It would be awesome if FCP allowed you to zoom in/out during edit to tape so you could check your work as you output.

Oh, we are totally getting an iPad app to go along with this program. I can feel it.

I would oh-so love the ability to down-rez a Final Cut project and send it to an iPad...do all my rough cutting there...and then bring it back to the Mac and re-link it to the real footage to do the detail work.

I've had a lot of fun playing with iMovie on the iPad. I am drooling for something similar that works as part of a Final Cut Pro workflow.

Interesting news, but the bit about booting competitors is downright disgusting.

I'm a little confused...why was Avid presenting at a Final Cut Pro User Group's meeting anyway? Do they just come in and are like "Hey, you've all made a mistake!" or something?

would those that have played this game reccomend getting it? or are there too many cons (standard cars, multiple versions of one car, bad AI in racing, bad physics in damage esp with standard, etc) that would lead to buyers remorse?

Keep in mind, I have played quite abit of Forza, but now have a PS3 and want agood racing sim but just keep hearing bad things about this game (largely being an incomplete game)

I'd say keep playing Forza 2 or 3 for now. Wait another 6mo-a year to pick up GT5 and its numerous proposed updates. As a game, Forza 2 and 3 are more complete packages, especially online.

    Bibbz,

I have a couple questions.. I want to preorder with radioshack. I am NOT the primary account holder, but I am an authorized user. I also know the last 4 digits of the account holders social. Will this be a problem when picking up the phone?

I also have a FAN account. Will these be a problem?
    FAN account isnt an issue.

At the shack we can only do an upgrade or add a line if the account holder is in the store. Some stores will do it, bc physically the computer will let us, but we are not supposed to.

    Another person who grasps it.

Again, come on now...... it's not a question of whether people grasp it. It's question of who finds it funny and who doesn't. It's possible to "grasp" a joke and still not find it funny once it has been done to death. Just because someone doesn't think it is funny doesn't mean you have to insult their intelligence by saying they just don't "grasp" it.

yeah the AI driver is piss poor at overtaking. it's all racing lines and he'll only overtake on a sharp turn or on a long straight. even with a significantly more powerful car the driver won't always come out on top. i remember in GT4 you could drop out of bspec into aspec and you could also speed up a race by several times to make the enduros go faster. so far i haven't seen this functionality in gt5?

the car trading sounds like fun. do u trade for car/car or car/$ or just gift back and forth? do both players have to be online at the same time?

thanks for the tips on the different car settings. i haven't been frustrated enough to try these out yet, but every little bit would help with those top gear tracks. i got so annoyed with the VW Bus and the lotus one that i just gave up and did other stuff. what did you get for completing the lotus/top gear?

Been skimming over 4 pages here so
forgive me if this has been answered...

The only way this Radio Shack deal seems
to work well is if I can walk in the store,
hand them my 3GS phone and get immediate
    credit towards an iPhone 4.

If I have to mail my 3GS back to RS and
then wait for a gift card to arrive in the
mail and then go to the store and buy the
iPhone 4 it is just not worth it.

So, the question is, can I simply go to
my Radio Shack store, hand them my
3GS and get immediate store credit on
    the new iPhone?

Yes, whole process takes less than 5 minutes.

You come in tell us you want to trade in
We log in and appraise it.
    Tell you the appraisal.
    You approve or decline.
If you approve, we then hit accept and generate a shipping label and some bar codes with a sku number, and amount of credit.
We put your old iphone in a box slap the label on it and put it to the side.
We then ring up whatever you are wanting to purchase.
Scan the sku that tells the computer its about to have an amount scanned.
    Scan the amount.
    Instant Happiness!

If your total ticket is more than the appraisal it removes the appraised amount, if its less we apply the rest to a gift card.

    Yeah! That's what'll happen!

Or they'll do further research and realize that the implications in this SINGLE ARTICLE might not be 100% true.

To the everyday user this means NOTHING as they have no knowledge of what open truly means, and therefore can't take advantage of it.

To the users who actually have the knowhow to utilize open source operating systems, this might mean a minor hinderance, but not a complete game changer.

And for clarification, the former is the vast majority.

Did no one notice the obvious bias in this article? It's slanted, and the author clearly thinks that Google has been wrong this entire time.

The everyday user has been buying Android phones in large numbers because they're cheap and are available on more carriers. This is not about everyday users, it's about the Fandroids who have been screaming "'Open' good, 'closed' bad!!" at the top of their lungs for the last three years.

I stand by my three groups: 1indiscriminate Apple-haters (like you), 2people who just want a team to root for: "Go Android!!" Right or wrong, and 3the true believers in the open-source religion.

Now as I said before, the only truly "open" phones would be FreeRunners that Stallman assembles in his Mom's basement from components gleaned from dumpsters and hands out for free, so I have no idea what new savior they'll turn to to save them from the tyrant Jobs. Be funny if it was Microsoft!

And no, I see no "bias" in the articleI think you're using the Rupert Murdoch definition: "Facts I don't want anybody to hear."

The big difference between Libya and Iraq is that in Iraq there wasn't a large insurgence controlling a decent proportion of the country before the troops went in.

My 3.0's shipping date just changed - for no obvious reason - from 8/20 to 9/19. One month. Clearly, something just got snagged in the supply chain.

    Anyone else have this?

okay, it seems to be a RAM bottleneck. I had ordered a couple of 2 gig chips from apple cause I didn't mind paying the penalty now in order not to have to sell 1 gig'ers later on.

anyway, I'm on the phone now, getting standard RAM configuration, then I'm just going to to with OtherWorld's RAM.

I wish Apple had gotten their RAM supplies in order before they started shipping. Well, what can you do.

The integrated Intel HD 3000 seems to be about equal to the integrated GeForce 320M when Barefeets did their tests on vidoe games.

On Portal, the HD3000 was 68FPS and the 320M was 65FPS.
    On X-Plane, the HD3000 was 38FPS and the 320M was 43FPS.

Certainly worth moving to SB processors.

    http://www.barefeats.com/mbps04.html

The 4Gig RAM limit is more critical than the change in graphics.

When rendering in FCP, it's all about the CPU.

Fast hard drives contribute to real-time effects, but do NOT contribute to rendering.

    Ram helps a little bit.

However, depending on what kind of rendering you're doing, the hard drive can be a limiting factor.

Say you're just rendering ten minutes worth of a blur effect on videothe CPU says 'gimme all you got' and goes to town on the frames, blurring each one quickly. But the hard drive may have a hard time keeping up with the CPU, because 10 minutes of footage needs to be read, then re-written to the drive. For HD-resolution video, that can be a couple gigs of data. And that data also has to pass through the RAM (which acts like a high-speed buffer).

However, in the case of these benchmarks, one would think the testers would choose some more CPU-intense rendering, which would allow the hard drive to take it's time while the CPU is overloaded with work.

But, to anyone configuring a graphics or video workstation: EverythingCPU, Hard Drives, RAM, and even the GPU for some tasksshould be as fast and ample as possible. "A chain is only as good as it's weakest link." If you pair up a Quad 3.0 GHz Xeon with a 5400 rpm USB 2.0 drive, you will be disappointed.
