Yes, built-in 3G is more costly to buy, usually locked into a particular carrier (what do you mean I can't switch my 1500$ laptop to a new carrier ?) and with the Rev D's 2nd USB port being next to a display port, the "extension" cable is moot.

So you are quite missing tons of things. The current scheme of "get a stick from your carrier" is the best as far as costs and carrier non-attachment go. I tether to my iPhone using Bluetooth anyhow, making the USB thing even more moot.

    Built-in 3G is overrated.

If you build a laptop, you're not forced to lock it to a carrier.

    Cellular sticks suck.

At the least, all laptops should have ExpressCard.

seems a little excessive. Hopefully there were some bits to the story left out.
    Otherwise, yeah... a little excessive.

Nothing was left out, if you read the story. Gun fire was exchanged. Obviously the mall guard had better training, possibly a moonlighting cop.

Armed security guards are pretty standard in Chicagoland too.

    USB3=native to all platforms
    TB=Mac Only

    Sounds like TB just died.

That's funny, I thought I first saw them show it off on a PC...

I agree with you. if someone is drunk and is still able to operate the app they could be a hazard if they avoid these points.

So I think we may see the entire line get a revamp: mac mini gets faster chips (still Yonah), perhaps same with MB, though that may just get a price drop. MBPs/iMacs get new processors, and we get the new MPs.

    All at WWDC?

I think we are likely to see another aluminum unibody, but without optical drive and HOPEFULLY with both an Air style blade SSD and a slot for a standard 2.5" hard drive. Add thunderbolt (and hopefully a third party TB to firewire hub of some sort), remove FireWire, remove optical, call it a day. That would be a very, very solid update.

I am not sure if it is a smart move for apple to enter into the cell phone market. There is a lot of competition and I think resources could be used better elsewhere. But it seems Apple knows a lot more about it than me.

With the switch to Intel, Apple may have to provide timely upgrades to remain competitive with Windows-based PC manufacturers.

Aint that the understatement of the year!

It should not have dual Thunderbolt. It should have 1 Thunderbolt (without DisplayPort if required) and 1 DisplayPort 1.2

The discrete graphics chips in the new iMacs support up to 6 displays (including built-in), but this is crippled by Thunderbolt.

The same happens with the discrete graphics of the MBPs, which could support up to 4 or 6 displays (including built-in).

    To some extent, sure.

The big difference is that in the UK you can get cars which do 55 miles per US gallon, one that does that - the 17,345 1.6 Econetic Ford Focus does nearly 62 miles per US gallon.

And that car is made by a US company.

wtf, my bike gets in the low 40s! and it weighs 4xxlbs!

The PC industry is plagued with lowest common denominator, low cost crap.

Apple and Intel are trying to move forward. We should support that.

    Thunderbolt is a step backwards.

The MBPs could have DisplayPort 1.2 if it were not for the damned connector merge.

A pair of security researchers today announced (http://radar.oreilly.com/2011/04/apple-location-tracking.html) that they are sounding the privacy warning bell about the capability of iOS 4 to track the location of an iPhone or iPad on an ongoing basis, storing the data to a hidden file known as "consolidated.db" in the form of latitude and longitude and a timestamp for each point. All iPhones appear to log your location to a file called "consolidated.db." This contains latitude-longitude coordinates along with a timestamp. The coordinates aren't always exact, but they are pretty detailed. There can be tens of thousands of data points in this file, and it appears the collection started with iOS 4, so there's typically around a year's worth of information at this point. Our best guess is that the location is determined by cell-tower triangulation, and the timing of the recording is erratic, with a widely varying frequency of updates that may be triggered by traveling between cells or activity on the phone itself. While the consolidated.db file has been known for some time and has played a key role in forensic investigations of iOS devices by law enforcement agencies, the researchers note the data is available on the devices themselves and in backups in unencrypted and unprotected form, leading to significant privacy concerns. Once gathered, the data is saved in backups, restored to devices if necessary, and even migrated across devices, offering a lengthy history of a user's movement.

    Oh great, not this again.

BTW iPhone is not an Apple trademark. Doesn't make much difference, I'm sure Apple wouldn't call it the iPhone anyway, but iPhone is owned by Teledex, who are an IP telephony manufacturer.

Apple could do us a few favours and publicly announce it will never, ever, sell an Apple phone, just so this speculation ceases. Every time this rumour surfaces, Apple's chances of dominating the cellphone-MP3 player market through neutral licensing agreements becomes a little less likely.

Of course, they could be that stupid. As people run from MP3 players to MP3 phones, Apple releases a phone, doesn't license the technology to the dominant players, and it's share of the market drops from 75% to 3-5%. At which point nobody cares about iTunes any more, and the labels, fed up of the refusals to offer tiered pricing and other gripes, walk away. Buh-bye Apple as a major multimedia force.

    Sep 15, 07:51 PM
I think the iPhone is going to beat out G5 powerbooks for the most annoying front page rumor.

    You are sooo right!!

of course if apple keeps us going with the merom laptops or holds out too long on blu-ray. those will come up close also.

So who said OS X is completely secure? Go back and read the statements that have been made.

That's just a straw man argument concocted to give some posters here an excuse to be argumentative, nothing more.

I think the building consensus is that PC gaming is wearing. Intel's graphic chip shouldn't detour many with the much improved CPU to boot. I'm totally happy I skipped the 2010 refresh.

Sweet! Now I can stop checking in with yelp, facebook, and 4square.

I'm in the who cares crowd. Many have posted that everything you do on a computer is being tracked.

Just go hide in a cave with no technology, no one will find you. Look at Bin Laden.

With few details available, the validity of this remains uncertain, but Electronista claims (http://www.electronista.com/articles/06/08/30/apple.sept.12.press.event/) that Apple may be holding a special press event on September 12th, 2006 based on an "official" email sent to Your Mac Life.

The date corresponds to the start of Apple Expo Paris (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/08/20060821202913.shtml) which runs from September 12th to 16th. It has already been announced, however, that there will be no Keynote event for the Apple Expo.

Meanwhile, Businessweek (http://www.businessweek.com/bwdaily/dnflash/content/aug2006/db20060831_806225.htm?chan=top+news_top+news+index_businessweek+exclusives) also places an announcement from Apple in the same time frame. According to their sources, Apple plans to start offering Movie downloads through iTunes in mid-September.

Finally, many users are expecting (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/08/20060814180417.shtml) Apple to release Core 2 Duo based laptops in September, but no further hints of this have been revealed.

Update: Mac4Ever is also reporting that Apple will be hosting a September 12th Event which will take place in San Francisco and be streamed to London.

Update 2: MacBidouille confirms that there will be a Keynote in San Francisco that will be relayed to London.
    - It was originally reported that Steve jobs will not deliver a Keynote at Apple Expo. He will indeed not be in Paris; but a Keynote will be organized in cupertino and relayed in London at Apple Europe HeadQuarter, where journalists have already been invited. There will are not relay organized at AppleExpo
