Following the 50 Cent-assisted failure of his last album, Fat Joe sought out to prove many things. Because of his lack of air play, his primary rival, 50 Cent began boasting of how he had ended the career of Fat Joe. There has also been the question of the value of Fat Joe. As many hits as he has recorded, he has never come with a classic album. Fat Joe blamed all of this on his nice personality.
Only three months after the release of his last album, Fat Joe made plans to release another album. Unlike his other albums released in the 2000s, Fat Joe had something new planned for the 2010s. In other words, he said "no more Mr. Nice Guy" and made plans to release a mean album. Titled The Dark Side, Joe prepared for war. When describing the album, he said that it would reinvent hip hop.
Initially, he announced collaborations from Trey Songs and Jeezy. Their songs were even released to the radio, but only as promotional singles. Following the release of those songs, Fat Joe took a break. During this break, he cut ties with EMI and signed with E1 Music, a label that he has had a longtime relationship with. After landing another record deal, Fat Joe was excited and he laid down some more tracks. He used a beat from Infamous to record a track called "Kilo," which features Cam'ron and the Clipse.
Aside from the collaborations with Trey Songz and Jeezy and his new track with Cam'ron and Clipse, Joe also recruited Scram Jones, longtime collaborators Cool & Dre, Buckwild, and Just Blaze to provide production for the album. There is no set release date for The Dark Side, but it will be coming out sometime before the end of this year. Previously, Fat Joe said that he would love to have the album out before the end of the summer season.
