New York hip hop has been down in the dumps for some time. If it had not been for Jay-Z keeping them afloat for so long, things could be a whole lot worse. Ever since the death of The Notorious B.I.G., it has been a downright struggle to keep the hip hop scene in New York relevant. Late last year, a major deal went overlooked when Capone-N-Noreaga signed with Raekwon and his Ice Water label. They have a one-album deal, but this is a legendary partnership.
Raekwon is the member of a well-known New York rap crew in the Wu-Tang Clan and Capone is a part of Capone-N-Noreage. Through this deal, Capone feels that he can help revive the hip hop scene in New York. Despite all of the feuding that is going on between the New York rappers, but he said that the entire hip hop scene can come together to create one big supergroup. He feels that he and his crew coming together with another big crew is the start of something major.
Outside of Jay-Z, there are plenty of New York rappers trying to break through. The frontrunners are Mims and Maino, meanwhile such rappers as Saigon, Reek da Villain, and Papoose are still trying to get their first album out. Last fall, Maino blamed such established artists as Jay-Z and Nas for stagnating New York hip hop. He feels that their unwillingness to move out of the spotlight is keeping artists like him away from being all that he could possibly be.
