Today marks the thirteenth anniversary since the death of The Notorious B.I.G. The rapper was gunned down on March 9 in Los Angeles after attending a party. He was in town to put the final touches on his second album, Life After Death. Even before he had gone out to California, he was warned that he was no longer welcome in Los Angeles. A lot of this stemmed from the death of his rival, Tupac Shakur. There were many people who thought that he was behind the death and they sought revenge.
However, The Notorious B.I.G. still made the trip out to Los Angeles and he recorded his hit single, "I'm Going Back to Cali," right before he went on the trek. Fearing for his life, Biggie called upon Sean "Puff Daddy" Combs to acquire protection for him as he went out West. Because of his association with Biggie, Combs was also in need of protection. Both men arrived in Los Angeles with a team of bodyguards. To secure the streets, they also made a deal with the neighborhood crips.
After everything was secured, The Notorious B.I.G. felt completely safe in Los Angeles. He was enjoying the city so much that he was even considering moving there. With the local gang members paid to defend him, there was nothing to fear. Anyone that wanted to try anything with Biggie would have to deal with them before even reaching Biggie. While he was enjoying himself in Los Angeles, The Notorious B.I.G. had to be in Eurpoe before the night set in on March 9. He partied from the late hours of March 8 and just as midnight hit, he and his entourage went to get ready for the flight. Just as they left the party, several bullets hit the vehicle that was transporting the New York rapper. Several shots hit the rapper and he died on the way to the hospital.
To this day, the murder of The Notorious B.I.G. has yet to be solved. The only thing that can be offered is ideas about his death is what could have happened. Some say that he was not really protected by the crips and people upset about Tupac's death killed the rappers. The most-popular theory is that Suge Knight had B.I.G. killed. There is often talk of a man named David Mack, who was a member of the LAPD and a close friend of Suge Knight, of hiring Amir Muhammed who was the actual gunman that killed the rapper.
