The months of speculation have finally come to an end when Drake released the first single of his debut album, Thank Me Later. There are a lot of people who still think that Drake's first album was released last year. Many do believe that So Far Gone was an album and that his singles, "Best I Ever Had" and "Successful," were official singles. That was not the case. Coming as a surprise to many, that was just his pitch to get a label to sign him.
Not only was Drake signed to a label, he was thrust into the spotlight. He signed with Lil Wayne's Young Money label one year ago and he has not looked back. Last year, Drake led the introduction to the Young Money crew. Back in 2008, Lil Wayne said that he was getting himself out of the way so that his crew could enter the game. While he planned to get out of the way, he did not expect to do so like this. His gun and drug charges from 2007 in New York have led to him spending the next year behind bars.
The pressure for Drake to lead has been on ever since Lil Wayne was confirmed to begin his prison sentence. There has been talk of Thank Me Later for over a year. Last year, Drake said that the album would be released in March of 2010. Right now, it is March of 2010, but Young Money decided that it was better for him to wait until the summer time to release his debut album. Still, Drake decided to live up to his promise of releasing something new in March. Yesterday, it was announced that Drake was finally going to release the lead single from his debut album. Today, "Over," the first official single by Drake was released.
When speaking about "Over," Drake is very optimistic. If his mixtape singles can crack the top ten, just imagine what his official singles will be able to do. Drake is confident about his new music and he feels that this single will be one of the defining ones in Young Money history. In the song, Drizzy raps that he will "set if off in this b*tch, Jada Pinkett. He also references Michael Jackson and Thriller with the line "bout to go Thriller, Mike Jackson on these n*ggas/all I need is a red jacket and some zippers." The song was officially released to radio today.
The album is supposed to follow along in June 2010 as a release on Young Money, Cash Money, and Universal.
