Ever since the release of his 2006 album, Hip Hop Is Dead, Nas shunned the younger hip hop fans. Last January, Soulja Boy accused the Queens rapper of killing hip hop, himself. At one point in time, Nas was hailed as the top lyricist in the game. But, his past few albums have not received much attention. Because of that, the game has shifted to the likes of Lil Wayne and other newer rappers that have strong lyrics. Unlike the younger hip hop fans, Fabolous grew up on Nas and he knows what he can do.
While he has been in the game for some time, himself, Fabolous did not get to know Nas until they both signed with Def Jam, in 2006. Their relationship stems from their respective friendships with former label head, Jay-Z. Because of Nas' friendship with Jay-Z, his album was the top priority of Def Jam. For that album, he was allowed to be as creative as he could possibly be. That was what led to him calling out the new generation of hip hop.
Even with no album out, Nas is fairly relevant in the game. However, in the late 1990s, he was one of the hottest rappers out. Not only was he one of the best lyricists, but he had found that happy medium where lyricism was met with commercial success. Much like Nas, Fabolous has been trying to do the same thing with his music. There are a lot of people who doubt that it is still in Nas, but Fab does not. With Nas preparing a new album for this year, Fabolous has urged him to try and find that happy medium, once again. If he does so, Fabolous feels that he can take the game over and let the youngsters know exactly who he is.
